The Importance of Laylatul Qadr – The Night of Power

Laylatul Qadr, also known as the Night of Power
or Night of Decree, is one of the most sacred and spiritually significant nights in Islam. It is the night when the Holy Qur’an was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through Angel Jibreel. Because of this great event, Laylatul Qadr holds immense importance for Muslims all over the world.

Allah mentions this blessed night in Surah Al-Qadr in the Qur’an and describes it as a night that is “better than a thousand months.” This means that acts of worship performed during this single night carry greater rewards than worship performed over many years. For believers, it is a precious opportunity to earn Allah’s mercy, forgiveness, and blessings.

During Laylatul Qadr, Muslims devote themselves to various acts of worship. Many spend the night performing voluntary prayers (Qiyam-ul-Layl), reciting the Qur’an, making dhikr (remembrance of Allah), and offering sincere supplications (dua). It is also a time for deep reflection, repentance, and renewing one’s faith and commitment to living a righteous life.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) encouraged Muslims to seek Laylatul Qadr during the last ten nights of Ramadan, particularly on the odd-numbered nights such as the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th nights. Because the exact night is not specifically known, believers are encouraged to increase their worship throughout these nights to ensure they do not miss its blessings.

One of the most recommended supplications for this night was taught by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). When Aisha (RA) asked what she should say if she found Laylatul Qadr, he advised her to recite:

“Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni.”
(O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me.)

Laylatul Qadr is also a night when angels descend to the earth with Allah’s commands and blessings. The atmosphere of the night is described in the Qur’an as peaceful and filled with divine mercy until the break of dawn.

For Muslims, this night is not only about seeking rewards but also about strengthening their relationship with Allah. It is a chance to turn back to Him sincerely, ask for guidance, seek forgiveness for past mistakes, and pray for a better future.

As Ramadan passes quickly, believers eagerly search for this blessed night, hoping to gain its immense rewards and spiritual benefits. Missing such an opportunity would mean missing one of the greatest gifts Allah has given to the believers.

May Allah grant us the ability to recognize Laylatul Qadr, fill our hearts with sincerity, accept our prayers and good deeds, forgive our sins, and bless us with His mercy and guidance.

Ameen. 🤲
